The 29-year-old American and world No.3, Venus Williams, won the opening match of the ladies’ singles at Wimbledon beating the Swiss Stefanie Voegele 6-3, 6-2 this past Tuesday.

Venus Williams is the defending champion of the ladies tournament and hopes to reach the final again this year. Williams won her first Wimbledon title in 2000 and has a record of 51-4 at this Grand Slam. Moreover, we have to mention that despite she had a bad performance at the French Open, where she exited early in the third round of the tournament, losing to the 29th seed Agnes Szavay 6-0, 6-4 ; many point her as the favorite and consider she may capture her sixth title at the All England Club this year.

At the beginning of the match, it looked like that Venus was still in the same poor form she was in Paris since she was double-faulted in the opening game, then she slipped – she was not the only one though, since it happened to other players in the first days of the tournament too – and later she had to save a couple of break points.

But Williams soon recovered and started turning the game her way. Venus then won 14 straight points and took a 5-1 lead in the first set. In the second set, Williams started with some errors and was losing serve for 2-all, but then won the final four games to obtain the victory and her ticket to the second round of the tournament.

After the game, Venus expressed her relief of regaining her confidence on her game and performing in better way in this opening match at Wimbledon as the defending champion.

“It was pretty straightforward. I really enjoyed being out there. You know, it's a special moment when you walk back as defending champion on that court, throw those balls up in the air for that first point. Having won this title multiple times, you get that sense of what it takes to win. And I definitely have a good grip on that; what it takes to win this title,” stated the former world No.1 Venus Williams.

On the other hand, Voegele said that despite playing aggressively at the baseline against Venus, the big difference was her serve. And even losing in the first round, for the Swiss this was a great experience and a good match.

Now with this good start for the world No.3, and also with 15 consecutive Wimbledon victories on her back, Venus Williams will continue to battle for her objective of getting her sixth title and will play the a second-round match against the No.73rd of the WTA ranking, the Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko, who is the youngest and the lower-ranked of the Bondarenko sisters in the circuit.

It is for sure that Venus is focusing on keep her winning ways and good performance in this tournament. We wish the best to the American on this following round against the Ukrainian and we hope the grass queen will play with majesty to get to the final.
