Alopecia, also called hair loss, baldness, and epilation, is a common side effect of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Most patients undergoing chemotherapy, especially those who are being treated with more than one drug, will suffer from hair loss.

A vigorous rubbing of the scalp with fingers after washing the hair with cold water is one of the most effective among the several home remedies for the prevention and treatment of hair loss. The scalp should be rubbed vigorously till it starts to tingle with the heat. It will activate the sebaceous glands and energise the circulation of blood in the affected area, making the hair grow healthy.

The juice of alfalfa, in combination with equal quantities of carot and lettuce juice, taken daily, also helps the growth of hair to a remarkable extent. The combination of these juices is rich in elements which are particularly useful for the growth of hair. While preparing alfalfa juice, the leaves of the plant may be used when they can be obtained fresh.

Yemeni med: Soak fenugreek (Hilba) in deep pot of water throughout the night. Massage the liquid into the scalp and wrap with a cloth for 3 hours. Repeat everyday for 1 month.

Two tablespoons of any warm oil (coconut, mustard, olive, sesame seed), to which ingredients like crushed pepper, garlic and herbs are added, can be used as a nutritious massage concoction for your scalp. The oil should be gently massaged by the fingertips in gentle, circular movements, until it is absorbed. This enhances circulation and also has a therapeutic effect. You can cover the scalp with a damp, warm towel, for a hot-turban therapy which makes the follicles absorb the nutrients better. Wash it off after an hour but not with a shampoo. Use a paste of either chickpea/gram flour or the powder of soap-nut (Reetha in Hindi) seeds. Neither of these takes the greasiness away entirely, but it makes the hair stronger and longer.
