My buddy George was also accepted at NYU and we’d arranged to rent a one bedroom apartment together. It was going to be cramped, but considering one bedroom apartments near campus were going for $1,500 a month, we decided that a two bedroom would be completely out of our reach and invested in bunk beds instead. We figured it would still be more exciting than living in residence. But, given that we had the bunk beds, a chest of drawers, a sofa, a couple of storage trunks, at least two garbage bags jammed full of clothes each, a stereo (with full sized speakers and a subwoofer), two computers, George’s big flatscreen TV and a couple of video game consoles -not to mention the food our parents wanted to send with us- we had a good sized load of stuff. Movers would be required.
We thought about renting a minivan, but there was no way we’d fit all that stuff in one. Then there was the option of renting a cube van and hauling the stuff ourselves. That didn’t look so attractive once we crunched the numbers.
