Traditional Movers Not An Option For College Student

When I was accepted to New York University, I couldn’t have been more excited.  I’d spent years with my nose to the grindstone, struggling to keep my grade point average up while holding down a part time job waiting tables.  It was a tough haul, especially the last year when Physics was driving me crazy, but I made it.  The only complication in my plans was the fact that NYU was in New York City (obviously), while I live with my parents in Tampa Bay.  That’s almost 1,200 miles away.  While my parents were worried about how much it would cost me for a flight home for visits, I was more concerned about Movers and how big a bite it would take out of my budget, considering how expensive Moving Companies can be.  The last thing I needed was working a second job through the summer to pay the costs of having my stuff shipped to school.

My buddy George was also accepted at NYU and we’d arranged to rent a one bedroom apartment together.  It was going to be cramped, but considering one bedroom apartments near campus were going for $1,500 a month, we decided that a two bedroom would be completely out of our reach and invested in bunk beds instead.  We figured it would still be more exciting than living in residence.  But, given that we had the bunk beds, a chest of drawers, a sofa, a couple of storage trunks, at least two garbage bags jammed full of clothes each, a stereo (with full sized speakers and a subwoofer), two computers, George’s big flatscreen TV and a couple of video game consoles -not to mention the food our parents wanted to send with us- we had a good sized load of stuff.  Movers would be required.

We thought about renting a minivan, but there was no way we’d fit all that stuff in one.  Then there was the option of renting a cube van and hauling the stuff ourselves.  That didn’t look so attractive once we crunched the numbers.  Gas was going to be expensive, it was a one way trip so the company wanted to charge us an extra fee and there was the prospect of navigating the streets of New York.  I was worried about maneuvering a minivan around, so the idea of a cube van was giving me fits.  Moving Companies were way too expensive.  We finally found the solution in U-Pack Moving.  Instead of Movers doing the packing, we did.  They dropped off a bin called a ReloCube, which we filled up, then they did the driving.  Much cheaper than Movers, but no fussing with driving for me.
