Narcissism is a character trait that involves self-admiration, self-centeredness, and self-regard. Everyone has some degree of narcissism. It is what motivates us to get dressed and wash our hair in the morning. However, like many things, narcissism falls on a spectrum.

Narcissists will shatter our self-confidence, confuse and frustrate us and demean and criticize us tremendously. They build us up only to degrade us, hurt our loved ones, involve us in their paranoid states of mind and withhold love and sex from us. Their emotional abuse can take months or even years to truly heal from.

Today’s culture rewards selfish and arrogant behavior. Narcissism is validated and reinforced everywhere you look. We have celebrities who have become famous for being rude, insensitive, and arrogant. We have shock jocks and women like Ann Coulter who say cruel and mean things about the widows of 9/11 to get attention. American culture rewards this behavior by putting them in the spotlight. The media caters to them.

A narcissist has a way of turning everything around so you begin to question yourself. He will do something terribly mean or cruel. You will talk to him about it, but by the end of the conversation, you are the one apologizing for some reason. A narcissist knows how to manipulate better than anyone.

We all deserve real, genuine love and there are people out there capable of it. Learn to differentiate a narcissist from someone with healthy self-esteem. You owe it to yourself. We all do. Narcissists cannot change. They are stuck in their own world where they are the center of the universe.
