England have named their squad for the up and coming test series against South Africa and anyone who put a cricket bet on Andrew Flintoff being recalled is going to be disappointed. The Lancashire all-rounder has missed out on the twelve man squad despite returning from injury this month.

It's a decision which doesn't really surprise me. He needs to be given more time before being thrown in at the deep end. However, I would bet on Andrew Flintoff making an appearance before the series is out. If he impresses for Lancashire in the next couple of weeks and England fail to perform, then the pressure will be on to recall 'Freddie'.

The focus for now though is the first test match against South Africa, which starts a week today. With reference to cricket betting, I would bet on England to lose this first test match. I am very wary of the South African threat and think they will be too strong for what is an inconsistent England side. Home advantage means England are slight favourties when looking at cricket odds, but I don't think it's going to pan out that way.

As well as Flintoff, another man tipped for a recall to the England side is Simon Jones. The fast bowler who performed so well for Michael Vaughan's men in the 2005 Ashes series is back playing again and is thought to be 'very close to a recall'.

With Steve Harmison taking bundles of wickets for Durham as well, perhaps the famous Ashes 2005 bowling attack will be in place again at some stage. You would bet on the England cricket squad being similar if they beat South Africa, but if they lose - the likes of Flintoff, Jones and Harmison could be called upon once more.
