Indian Essentials

Indian Essentials is a quirky collection, to say the least, as there are twenty social commentators and of course writers (this is a book after all) have gathered together to make an effort to understand the psyche of the Indians. Everything is discussed threadbare, be it the female fascination with gold or Indian male’s penchant for public urination. Other equally quintessentially Indian subjects discussed are the melas of Allahabad and the jhatkas of Bollywood, the frank matrimonials which embarrass us or our obsession with not talking about sex, nothing is left untouched.

'Beatrice and Virgil: A Novel' by Yann Martel is the brilliant and potent journey that takes you into the world of survivors who know what it is to live a life in the face of evil. The narrator of the book is a novelist named Henry who is going through writer’s block after having written a successful first novel. He strongly believes the story of holocaust has not been told enough through fiction. The author believes readers would understand the Holocaust better through fiction.

Once you have read the book cover to cover, the only question that goes through your mind is whether the suggestion given by the authors is practical enough. The five laws given in the book do sound good but how do we apply it all in the real life situations?

The Twilight phenomenon started in 2006 and the subject of vampire romance became a huge hit with the teenage girls. The story of Harry Potter was due to end in 2007 and the literary market had space for a new story. Stephanie Meyer was suddenly a J K Rowling, though some people doubt if the saga would ever get any prizes like the Harry Potter series did. Though the common elements are still there, such as both the sagas are written by women and both became huge hits among millions of readers.

The Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson has become a global sensation in a remarkably short time. Nobody (almost) knew of him outside Sweden before the first volume of his Millennium trilogy came out in 2005, whereas the worldwide sales of his books last year were second only to Khaled Hosseini. The security for his latest book “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” (ISBN-13: 9781906694173) was something seen only with Harry Potter books. The level of anticipation for this book was at an unprecedented high and was eagerly awaited since the second volume left the story at a cliff hanger.

Deliver Us from Evil by David Baldacci

Monsters are a huge hit with the masses right now, though the supernatural monsters are not the scariest types anymore. The book “Deliver Us from Evil” by David Baldacci (ISBN-13: 9780446564083) follows the monster hunters. There are two groups of monster hunters in the book and they meet once they discover they are both up against a common adversary. The author David Baldacci is an author who has perfected the art of character development. He expertly colorizes his protagonists and Shaw and Reggie are no different. They discover each other gradually though the process is tenuous in the beginning and only grows with the progress of the book.

The productivity manual by David Allen starts by telling you about changed reality of the modern world. The author understands the primary challenge in this age is the information overload. Most of the workers employed in the workplace are knowledge workers, and it means they are hired for what they know. The projects being assigned to the knowledge workers come with undefined boundaries and the guidelines are also more flexible than ever. The dilemma is also different from the one we had in the yesteryears, how do we organize ourselves better as knowledge workers?

The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak

If the books concentrate on living with the choices you have or about knowing yourself they may have a very broad appeal. The fact that the book “The Forty Rules of Love: A Novel of Rumi” written by Elif Shafak focuses on spirituality may limit its appeal to some extent. At the same time, reviewers do like the idea which forms the basis of this book, transformation of life through a book.

Dork by Sidin Vaduku

Are you interested in knowing what does everyman look like? The secret is out, he looks like Robin ‘Einstein’ Varghese. He is the omnipresent character (the engineering management types, you already know them, right?) created by Sidin Vaduku. Robin takes up the career just because he wants to have a good career, and makes the money that should rightfully go to the creative types (this is a biased opinion from a writer).

The Emperor’s Code is headed towards an explosive finish, though you must start the book right from the beginning. We strongly advise you against the very human nature to go to the last page first and bore yourself to death. One of the protagonists, Dan, also faces the same challenge in the book, he hates being bored.

It would have been surprising if the plot of the narrative chosen by Philip Pullman had not stirred a hornet’s nest. Expectedly, it has done so though Philip Pullman is well renowned all over the world for his dislike of organized religion as well as for portraying God unflatteringly. The gospel stories as written by Philip Pullman are, obviously, unchristian. The book “The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ” was written by Philip Pullman when he was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams to tackle Jesus after he had already written about God.

By all standards, “Songs of Blood and Sword: A Daughter’s Memoir”, written by Fatima Bhutto, is a difficult read and is awkwardly (because of the enormous element of violence) told. Fatima Bhutto is known more as the niece of Benazir Bhutto, though she has a strong personality of her own. Just 27 years old, she is also a journalist, a poet and of course, beautiful. However long and hard you look through the pages of the book to find the mention of a natural death, you are unlikely to come across one. The unnatural deaths are strikingly common for the Bhutto family though you’ll go on reading the book to get a first-hand account of what happened to this family and why.

The fake IB (*P)L player who shocked the cricket world with the famous blog last year, the FIP (Fake IBL Player) the name (and many more things) has been changed to escape the probable legal problems. The book is a true inside look at the scandals and turmoil of the entire tournament. The book is much more than just the blog. The book has been rightly named “The Gamechangers” whereas the tournament itself has been aptly renamed as Indian Bollywood League. The names of the players, coaches and main characters have been changed from the blog. For example, Appam Chutiya has been renamed Prashanth.

Have you often wondered what makes any book become extraordinary from the ordinary? It is the timing of the book. This decision is to be taken by the author as it is his job to anticipate what the readers are looking for. The setting of the book The Immortals Of Meluha (ISBN-13: 9788183860697) is such that any civilization which is facing problems like Meluha, people will get the feeling that a savior like Lord Shiva is on his way. Written by Amish Tripathi, there is some contradiction in the way it is said the suave and methodical Meluhans accepted him as their savior, although their legend had already proclaimed this.

The White Tiger From Aravind Adiga

Recently, we have seen a growing breed of Indians who are comfortable with their vertical growth and are of aggressively consumerist mindset. That’s the reason why the term New India has been coined to explain that we have two Indias existing at the same time, one is stock market driven and the other is called the Darkness by the writer Aravind Adiga. The book The White Tiger (ISBN-13: 9788172238476) is definitely not India shining, it is more about a country and some of its citizens who are in complete awe of their own success.

Blowback by Mukul Deva

Mukul Deva feels most comfortable writing stories which are set with the military environment of the country in the background. He always manages to create racy plots and the details of the stories are developed very convincingly. He understands the nuances of how terrorism emerges and how the masterminds manage to brainwash gullible youths to their cause. The technical aspects of how the bombs are created, how training and indoctrination takes place as well as the emotional and religious backgrounds of the people, are all very real.

India’s Great Masters by Raghu Rai

With the greats of Indian classical music, even the most complicated of thoughts are uttered in a simple and down to earth manner. The classical music masters were looking for the divine and the great photojournalist Raghu Rai was looking to picture their soul through his lens for his book India’s Great Masters by Raghu Rai (ISBN-13: 9788172239466). That pretty much explains the process through which this book got its present shape. The great classical musicians tell us about the concept of the true note, a stage that can be reached only by the most dedicated.

If the success of his earlier book “Keep Off The Grass” is anything to go by, there is absolutely no reason why his publishers Harper Collins India should not go overboard with his next book, “Johnny Gone Down”.
